Friendship Knot Spell [Spell Saturday #45]

Friendship spells are weird. They’re probably one of the best kinds of spells for people to cast, but they’re rarely available. Gaining friends when you’re an adult is notoriously hard and is something almost everyone wants yet friendships spells are usually sequestrated into books geared towards teenagers.

What’s with that anyway? I think it’s a product of this weird idea that as an adult, you’re suppose to have stuff figured out. Like a life purpose, awesome life-long friends, best spouse ever, well-paying job, picket fence house, and all that jazz. (Spoilers: Uhhhh, yeah, that doesn’t happen often)

Anyway, I routinely get asked for friendship spells. A friendship knot spell was requested over on tumblr and was put on my “to write” list. The request is now being fulfilled.

Friendship Knot Spell by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

  • Embroidery floss in various colors
  • A list of qualities your friend(s) should have

First, write a list of qualities your friend(s) should have. Maybe they’re very kind or extremely laid back. Maybe they’re adventurous or outgoing. They could be giant geeks or are gym regulars. Whatever you want your friend to be. Pick general qualities like compassionate or something that’s an activity you’d like to share. If your’e trying to gain a group of friends, you might want to write out a couple of lists.

Dig out your color symbolism chart or jot down the colors each of those qualities remind you of. For example, maybe your gym has an orange theme to it so you pick orange to represent that so you can find a gym buddy. Or you pick your favorite show’s color themes so you can find fellow fans. Refer to a color symbolism chart if you’re a bit at a loss or google color associations with that quality. It should, ideally be colors you associate with those qualities.

Once you’ve gotten your color choices, head to a craft store and buy thread or embroidery floss that matches your color choices. You can also dye thread, ribbon, or shoe laces to match. You can use multiple colors to represent the same thing or the same color to represent two things, if you like.

When ready, gather all the thread in your hands in a long tendril and think of the kind of friends you want. You can use comparisons, if you like. If you like the bond that two characters on a TV show have or you’d had a friend as a child that you don’t want to reconnect with but you miss that kind of bond, think of that.

Now make a knot for each quality you want your friend to have. If you have six strands of thread, then make a knot that includes all six strands. Do this for each quality you want your friend or friends to have.

Say the following.

With this knot, I invite companions [tie a knot tightly as you say this]

With each knot, I bring friends to my side [tie another knot]

My friend(s) will be [quality] [tie a knot]

[continue making knots for each quality]

With this knot I close the spell and open my heart to friends loyal and true that w ill come to me before the next moon [tie a knot tightly as you say this]

When done with your knots, carry the cord with you. Wear it as a necklace, anklet, or bracelet. Or tie it to your keys or in your hair. Thread it through a zipper or carry it in a pocket.

If the spell doesn’t work before the next moon, you can unknot the cords, cleanse the thread and try again with new qualities. Or you can bury the cord but do so in a garden plot rather than bare ground.

Notes:

  • This spell is geared to bring you new friends within a month or so. If you want to give yourself more time, you can adjust the time period accordingly in the wording
  • Braiding, knitting, or using macrame techniques is a fantastic alternative to knotting the cord. It’s up to you.
  • Embroidery floss it the most accessible here but feel free to substitute yarn or any other threading material.
  • It’s a super good idea to follow up this spell with spells to maximize opportunities to meet people. So if you’re super shy, then a spell to boost confidence would be a good idea.

Think of Me [Spell Saturday #44]

This spell is to have someone think of you. Typically, you’re casting this spell to get a special someone to contact you but this can also be anyone. Lovers, potential lovers, ex-lovers, family, friends, or people you just need to freaking call you back already.

What you’ll need:

  • String, ribbons, or thread that represents your target, at least two feet long.
  • String, ribbons, or thread that represents you, at least two feet long.

Gather together some string, ribbons, or thread that reminds you of this person. Maybe it’s their favorite color. Maybe it’s the color of their car or online avatar. Or maybe you select some color symbolism. Up to you.

Collect a second set of strings, ribbons, or thread that represents you. They could be your favorite colors or color symbolism.

Sit down quietly and think of the perfect scenario in which they’ll contact you. Maybe they don’t call you enough, maybe they don’t answer your texts. Or they simply are too “busy” to hang out. Be specific. If you want to see them three times a week, then say that. Go ahead and get a little unrealistic and think of exactly the kind of scenarios and things you’ll do during that time. As you do this, run the string through your hands. Make sure you keep the two sets of thread separate. You can braid a set together if you like but don’t braid the two sets together. So if set one has three strands, and set two has five strands, you can braid the three strands from set one together and separately you can braid the five strands from set two together but don’t braid the two sets (so all eight strings) together.

Keep the cord on hand so the next time you talk to them, see them online, or in person, you can tie a knot. Make a quick but solid knot in the cord. Do this for an entire week and make as many knots as you’d like them to contact you each week. Make only one knot for each instance you see them (whether online, in person, or what-have-you). You may find that you have enough knots before the week’s out. You can stop as soon as you get to the number of times you want to be contacted.

With the second set of strands, you should make a knot every time you think of them for the entire week.

Once the week’s finished, knot the two sets of string together and say something like,

“Think of me

I think of you

So think of me

Keep this cord with you at all times until they start contacting you as much as you want them to. If the cord becomes worn before this happens, burn it and repeat the spell. If the person never contacts you as you wish to be contact, you may want to readdress whether they care for you as much as you care for them. If your desires become fulfilled, bury the cord in a garden, leave it for birds to use in their nests, give it to your target as a gift, or keep it in a junk drawer.

Notes:

  • You can use a single piece of string, ribbon, or whatever else for this spell.
  • Embroidery floss is kind of perfect for this spell as it gives you lots of color choices and has a very long length.
  • Make the cords super long. It’s better to have too long cords than not long enough cords for this particular spell. Two feet is a good starting point.
  • Feel free to switch up the wording to better suit your needs. I usually go back to my theatre roots and start co-opting words from The Phantom of the Opera.
  • I know I said “sit quietly” but if there’s a song or playlist that perfectly matches your feelings for this person, go ahead and listen to that on repeat.

Happy casting!

Strengthening Love (Spell Saturday #42)

A spell for strengthening love between two consenting partners. Ideally, both parties are already in a committed relationship together.

It’s a simple knot spell that can be done simply or can be done in an incredibly complicated and research intensive way. Up to you. Be sure to read the spell entirely before starting.

I mean to share this spell with a specific person who emailed me but their emails disappeared from my inbox. I hope they see this!

What you’ll need:

  • Red or pink dye
  • White rope or fabric

First, find yourself white cotton rope or fabric. It must be capable of absorbing dye and should be about two feet long and at least a finger’s width in diameter. The thicker your rope is, the longer it should be. White fabric such as silk or wool can be used instead of cotton.

Pick something that either fits your bedroom decor or can be hidden on/under/above/around the bed. Pillow cases for decorative pillows are a great choice but even a scrap of cloth can work. A piece of rope could easily be twisted into a decorative shape or macrame object. A white blanket would be incredibly ideal for this spell but could be very difficult to dye. If trying a large item such as a blanket, you’ll need to either spread the dye by hand, risk the bathtub (not recommended), or buy a huge plastic tub and dye your material in that.

Next, select a dye. A standard fabric dye can be purchased at a craft store and is by far the easiest way to go. Make sure to read the instructions included with the dye and ready whatever you need to set the dye like a heated iron.

If you want to complicate things for yourself, try a plant based dyes. Raspberries, cherries, beets, strawberries, avocado seeds & skins, madder, chochineal, radishes, coreopsis, hibiscus, or pomegranates give some good results in the color range we’re shooting for. There are other materials you can use (hydrangea gives a pretty light pink color) but remember to combine your materials with plant symbolism.

Mordants will be needed to set a natural plant dye. You can skip a mordant but the color will fade quickly and you’ll have to re-cast and re-dye the spell again, risking the spell fading. Different mordants can affect the colors differently so be sure to do your research.

You’ll also need to work out how long the fabric or rope needs to sit in the dye. Overnight is probably a good bet but if you’re aiming for a specific shade, you’ll have to play with the times and watch it closely.

Test your dye choices with a scrap of the same rope or fabric. You’ll want to know that these are the right color choices and that the color is what you want it to be after it sets.

Once you’ve worked out the logistics of what you’re dying and how you’re dying it, you can start the spell. Cleanse your material. Cleansing water is a good choice but may mess with your dye. Letting the fabric sit in the sunlight or moonlight is another good choice but the cleansing method is entirely up to you.

Dye your fabric or rope. Let it dry completely. You can add a chant or intention in while you’re dying the material if you like. It’s wholly up to you.

Once completely dry, you and your partner should stand together in your bedroom and make vows and promises to each other while knotting the materials or rope. It’s ideal that you set the mood for this stage. Make it a romantic night of it. If you’re using something like a blanket, dye thread along with the blanket and stitch something small together. Running the thread through the blanket, making a knot, then running it through the blanket again is also good. Be sure that both of you touch the material while working this spell.

Re-dye the material if it fades. You may need to do this periodically, depending on your dye choice. Make sure to do this if it does fade as it risks the spell fading as well.

If you want to end the spell, either un-knot the material. Re-dye the material to white before dying it another color. (Even if you’re selecting a color like black, re-dye it back to white first).

Remember to wash the dyed rope or whatever you’re using in cold water by itself. You’ll entirely regret washing it in warm water with other things unless you want to ruin your laundry.

Notes:

  • You can do this without your partner’s assistance but it should be done with their informed consent. Ideally, you both should have a hand in this spell.
  • If you’re not crafty, then aim for the store-bought dye. It’s far easier to use without messing with the plants.
  • The stitching for large items like a blanket can be on the inside, underside, or along a seam, hiding the stitching from the naked eye.
  • Picking flowers or the plants together to create the dye is another good step to empower this spell with love.
  • You can rehearse what you want to say to one another or you can wing it. It’s up to you.

Happy casting!

Turtles and Crown’s Symbolism of Them.

Today my turtle decided to come out and play.

Background information. I have a box turtle. His name is Tama (although everyone calls him ‘Turtle’) and he’s just over seven years old and is lazy. Now, I’m not talking about lazy compared to a human or a cat. I mean lazy compared to other turtles of his species. And he’s always been like that. There’s nothing wrong with him. He at one time shared his container with another turtle but we never got a new one after the other one died because he seemed happier. He has a huge rabbit cage he lives in all to himself. He likes his turtle pellets and occasionally will eat the vegetables and fruit we provide (which we do, constantly, but he rarely touches the stuff.) Really, he likes his hide-away cave and to be left the hell alone.

Today though, I was walking by to talk to the Necromancer about E3 and the turtle was out and about in his cage. Looking for delicious food, mucking about in his huge water pond, and generally being active. This is surprising because I haven’t seen him for about two weeks. We check, daily, to see if he’s alive. We change the food and water. Weekly we switch out the soft coconut we use for cage cover. But it’s something of a marked occasion when we see him come out on his own.

Because I needed to clean his cage anyway, I took him out of his home and checked him over. I don’t know a whole lot of detailed anatomical information about turtles, but I can tell whether or not they’re healthy or need a vet. He was active, alert, and wanted to be put down. So I put him on the ground and he wandered the living room while the cats watched him from a distance.

Why am I talking about my turtle?

Mostly, because I really love turtles. I find them easy to manage and great pets to keep (if you’re willing to put in the work and expense for them). I don’t use turtles in my witchcraft but I really love symbolism for what they stand for (to me).

What symbolism? Longevity. Quick to hide and seek shelter. They have a hard shell which they are connected to but are so soft inside. They don’t carry their homes with them, but at the same time they do. Their homes are literally a part of them; they can’t be parted from them. They wander, always attached to their home, but bury themselves in their homes as well. The original wandering hermit. Always alone even in a group.

To me, turtles are wise, determined creatures (and they are determined little buggers). When they set out for something, they stick to it. Unless a predator is coming towards them, they do not deviate from their paths and plans. They don’t move just laterally but climb too, and they soak in the sun (I have a great love of the sun) and the heat.

Omnivores, depending on the species, they’ll consume insects, fruits, vegetables, fish, and even some meats. (You can feed turtles cat food, for example, depending on species. Best ask a vet or herpetologist first.) Turtles can make this hissing sound and can snap or bite when they need to. So while they might defend themselves by pulling deep into their shells, they’re willing to attack too. Turtles tend to be able to camouflage themselves and are great at hiding (not just in their shells but in the environment). They are slow to move but sometimes they’re quick little bastards. (I’ve personally spent several minutes chasing turtles around the living room.)

Brave little creatures, I’ve seen my turtle look directly at the cats and keep on trucking as if they weren’t afraid of this huge creature willing to eat them. (My cats leave him alone. Bothering the turtle never ends well for them when they’re caught at it.)

Turtles frolick. They do. A land turtle, upon discovery of a pond of water, will frolic. They’ll frolic when placed outside. They have fun and play.

I associate turtles with divination, although why I can’t say as I don’t use turtles or turtle shells as a divination method. Possibly due to the hermit idea that they could spend a lot of time in deep introspection.

Now, as I listed above, I have my own symbology for each animal. Some of it based on the animal itself or what I associate with them. Some folklore or historically based. Some of that symbolism is common, some not so much. I tell all my students to consider creating their own symbology for animals as they go. It’ll help discover the meanings of dream, visions, and in general is incredibly useful for divination.
