Solar Ritual to Bring Hope

Everyone has moments where they are staggered and lose hope. It happens to everyone. Some people bounce back easier from such blows and others have more difficulty. This spell is designed to give you a sense of hope once again. To lighten the load spiritually, so to speak.

Since this ritual is based on the sunrise, you’ll have to get up rather early (or stay up), so make sure that you plan accordingly.

Solar Ritual to Bring Hope by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

Clear bottle or glass of water

A drink of something you consider soothing and comforting

A jacket, shawl, shirt, or something that you love to wear and you feel comforted by, bonus if it has a hood.

A bell (optional)

Meditation, affirmations, prayers, or something that provides you strength and hope (optional)

First, google when the sunrise is on the day you want to cast the spell. I usually type “sunrise is at” and google provides the exact time of the sunrise for my location. Keep in mind this time is for the sunrise. The lightening of the sky and dawn itself lasts longer and starts earlier so set your alarm about fifteen or more minutes before so you can get up and watch the whole sunrise.

You’ll also need a location so you can watch the sunrise. A convenient parking lot, for example, a roof, beach, or a garden are good. A window that gets lots of sunlight will probably have a view of the sunrise (and possible even the sunset) as well. Make sure you can get to this space in time for the sunrise.

Once you’ve determined your location and time, you can prep the spell ahead of time so you don’t have to scramble in the morning.  You may need to prep your drink ahead of time or grab other essentials like a chair or shoes and set them out so you can go right away.

To cast the ritual, stand or sit in the pre-dawn light. Bow your head once to the sun as it rises. Now thank the sun for rising.

The sun is a constant source for us. We know that it will rise. We know this. That’s why people use the sun as a sense of renewal and hope. The sun is here, unimpressed by our turmoil. It rises, despite us cursing it for sunburns or being too bright on tired eyes. It’s time to pay respect for the sun’s existence and it’s strength.

Raise your water glass to the sun as it rises, trying to angle the growing light so it shines through the cup and water and finally onto you. Once you manage this angle, raise it higher to salute the sun and drink the glass.

Put the empty cup aside and bow your head once more to the sun, a subtle thanks for giving you her strength in a cup.

Now pray or petition the sun to give you strength, hope, guidance, or whatever else you may need. This is the time to pour out your heart to the sun. Once you feel empty or ready to move on, wrap yourself up in the jacket or whatever you brought with you for comfort. Drink your drink and take a moment to gather your internal strength. When ready, move onto the next part.

Stand up and/or straighten up as best you can and square your shoulders like you’re about to enter a room and own that space or prepare yourself for battle. Take a deep breath and release it, at your own pace. Bow your head to the sun again, in thanks for listening.

Now gather up any energy or magical strength you can currently muster. Don’t worry if you don’t feel like you have a good grasp on it or you feel like you’re not getting anything at all. You’re aiming to remove any remaining traces of hopelessness at this time. Again, don’t worry if you don’t feel like you managed this or can sense this energy. Just going through the motions with this ritual is enough.

Place your hand on your heart and then fling your arm out, as if ripping something away from you.  Make a grabbing motion with that flung out hand, as if snatching something out of the air. Press the close fist to your heart. Ideally, this should be a smooth motion and done while saying something like the following,

I cast aside this hopelessness, this fear, this uselessness.

I am myself. I am enough. I will always be enough.

I will take my power into my hands and conquer what I put myself to.

Now, you can go about your way if you feel like you’re ready to get shit done.

If you still  aren’t ready, that’s OK. Try out the rest of the ritual. Break out your meditation, affirmations, or prayers. Go through a session with these things to provide additional guidance. Take as long as you need. When you’re finally ready to start your day, clear the space by ringing the bell.

This ritual can be repeated as often as you like, with whatever personal variations you need to make so it feels right to you.

Notes:

  • The bell does not have to be a physical bell. It can be a bell phone app, the ringing of a singing bowl, or some other ringing cleansing sound.
  • You don’t have to fill the glass of water completely. Just fill it enough so you can comfortably drink it in one go. If all you can manage is an ounce of water, than use that.
  • If you plan well ahead, you can even use solar water as the drinking water for a double charge of solar energy.

Fire Protection Spell

Fir e protection and fire safety is huge for me during this season. There’s tons of forest fires right now and there’s increased household fires due to people cooking more and Christmas light issues. Heaters can go wrong, fireplaces can be blocked, and people can put items too close to fire and heat sources. Essentially, fire safety and protection is really impotant during the winter months because we rely on it so much.

This spell is not about preventing fires. It’s not about fire safety. It is about protecting items from being on fire. So this spell is ideal for the rug that’s nearby the fireplace or the chair closest to the room heater. Use this spell in conjunction with fire safety and fire prevention spells to really shine.

What you’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Ash or lampblack
  • Water
  • Colorants (optional)

First cut a piece of paper down to five inches by five inches or less. You cna make the shape or size whatever you want by five by five is a good size.

Next, lightly brush water over the paper on both sides and let air dry. The paper shouldn’t be soaked or sopping by rather lightly damp. Make sure it is dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Take your ash or lampblack and mix it with a little water so it’s a paste with paint-like thickness. Do a little at a time so you can control the consistency.

With the paintbrush, paint the following sigil or your own sigil style for fire protection. Let the sigil dry in between if there’s multiple layers to the sigil (like the X over the fire, for example).

My sigil is based loosely the Gylph of Warding from Dragon Age: Origins. I do many different styles of sigils so feel free to alternate to a sigil design that you prefer. Your sigil will not have color unless you add colorants like paint, mica, dried herbs, or other coloring ingredients.

Once the sigil is drawn, let it dry completely. When dry, place the sigil under, on, or near the item you want to protect. If you want to protect the rug from the fireplace, for example, then place this sigil under the rug.

Notes:

  • You can use a fixant spray, if you like, or put the sigil in a plastic bag to keep the sigil from damage.

Protection from Fire [Spell Saturday #69]

This is a spell designed to protect a home, business, or location in general from fire. This is not going to guarantee your home will be fire-free so make sure you have appropriate renters, business, or homeowner’s insurances along with fire safety equipment.

Seriously, don’t be foolish. Don’t use just this spell to protect your home.

What you’ll need:

  • A sigil against fire
  • Ashes from a fire that has burned in your home or on your property
  • Holy water or water enchanted with protective energies (see notes)

First, create a sigil that is to protect you and the surrounding area from fire. You can use any method you like to create the sigil or you can borrow a sigil from another source. Or you can just take a picture of a fire. Print or write out the sigil. It doesn’t have to be a big image, just visible enough to define clearly.

Gather the ashes from a fire. The ashes can be from a fire pit, fireplace, or even some paper burned in a metal trash can. You’ll probably need a handful or more of ashes so make sure you have enough before starting this.

Take the ashes and mix them, little by little with the holy or protective water. You’re trying to make a slightly thin paste. It should feel a bit like pancake batter or ointment – thicker than paint but thinner than a buttercream frosting.

Once you have your paste, go up to the lowest accessible point in your house and trace the sigil on the paper (or, even better, onto the house itself) with the paste. Allow to dry.

Not go to the highest accessible point of your house and do the same thing. You may also want to repeat the procedure in all four corners of the house.

Toss the paste once you’re done. Keep holy water or protective water on hand. Every year or so, go back over the sigil with the holy water.

Notes:

  • Google “sigil generator” to find an online generator if you’re really stuck when it comes to a sigil.
  • Protective water can be anything you like. It could be gathered from a stream on your property, salt water, blessed water, or holy water. Even full moon water is good. Any of these waters are perfectly acceptable. It just has to be water that you feel is incredibly protective.
  • Make sure that the paste didn’t mold. A couple days after you’ve done the spell, double check to make sure it hasn’t gotten moldy or gross. If it has, you can scrape it clean and trace the sigil again with the holy water.
  • If you’re writing on the paper and not the house, make sure that you have enough sigil papers to go around. If the paper gets to be too worn to use, make up a new one and repeat the spell.

The Sun’s Invitation [Spell Saturday #67]

This is a very adaptable spell. It’s used to increase the things you want more of in your life. So if you want love, you’ll add that component. If you want money, you add that. It’s used for what you want. Unlike the full moon or sun variations of this spell, this one can be used to invite things you do not currently possess into your life.

That being said, this can be a tricky spell to pull off in some people’s home environments. You need complete darkness on a new moon night.

Ingredients:

  • Items you want to increase in your life
  • Solar Water [see notes]

Collect together items that represents the things you want in your life. You might have a handful of cash, a picture of a college diploma, a love letter written to a dream lover, or anything else. Think creatively and simply. If you want to travel to Aruba, put in a picture of Aruba. Don’t make things hard for yourself by trying to collect the perfect representations. If you can’t get a visual, write or draw it.

Once you have together your items, take them and place them on a table next to a window where there is sunlight all day long. If your space is secure, put it outside on a balcony or in your yard. Or take it to the park or beach with you. You want as much light as possible to sit on these items.

Be smart about this. Don’t leave a wad of cash on your windowsill and expect it to not get stolen if you live on the ground floor and leave the window open. Be as discreet as possible with your items but don’t cover them up. If something will become faded by the sun and you still want to keep it, take a picture of it and use that instead.

Place a drop of solar water on each item then leave them there all day long. You can leave the items untouched for a full 24 hour period or you can take the items away immediately. You may wish to avoid spending any money used in this spell until after the full moon.

You can repeat this spell as often as you like.

Notes:

  • Solar water recipe is to gather water on a bright sunny day from a sunny location. A good example would be to collect water from a river on a sunny day. A more reasonable alternative is to pour tap or filtered water into a jar and leave that in the sun for a full day (sunrise to sunset).
  • If you’re charging water, crystals, or anything else by the moon’s light, do this in a separate location than this spell.
  • If something is water sensitive, you can just dab the water on your finger and run it along the least sensitive surface and wipe it off. Or dampen a cloth with the solar water and wash the item that way.
  • We avoid putting the items in a bag or container so the lack of sunlight can touch them. A good middle ground is a big glass mason jar.

Happy casting!

Poppet Healing Spell [Spell Saturday #63]

I was glancing through my healing spell section (which, I’ll admit, is lacking) and discovered I never posted a healing spell using a poppet. Which is super weird because healing poppets are my go-to for chronic illnesses and I like to think I specialize in poppet based magic. Plus, poppet healing spells are fairly universal worldwide and historic.

Let’s fix that today. Here’s a healing spell that can be used for any type of healing. Adapt the wording as you please to better accommodate your needs. You’ll need to make a poppet before using this spell so head over here for instructions to sew a poppet. Or you can check the notes for other poppet alternatives besides sewing.

What you’ll need:

  • A pre-made poppet with a healing focus
  • Two white candles
  • A glass of water

Place the two candles between and slightly above the poppet. Place the poppet in front of you and the glass of water below it, so that the water is closest to you. Take a moment to rest your mind, center yourself, and banish errant thoughts as much as possible.

Raise your energy, focusing on putting it into your hands. If energy manipulation isn’t your thing, raise power any way you can (chant, dance, meditation, etc).

Place your hand on the poppet and say,

“Poppet before me

I name you [target’s name]

What I do to you, I do to them

You are one in the same

Until this spell ends.”

Now this poppet can be used for any sort of spell on your target. You can keep this poppet so that you can cast healing or protection spells on the target several years down the line if you want to. Check out the notes for a way to end this spell.

It’s time to start the healing spell. Light the candles and gather the energy back into your hands, in case it’s waned. Place your hands over the afflicted area. If it’s not known, focus on the core of the body, especially the chest. Push the energy into the poppet, if you can. Focus on the person being healthy and happy. Envision this or speak your intent in your mind or aloud.

When you’ve established a clear image (whether mentally or verbally) of what you want, say the following

“I cleanse the sickness from [target’s name]

I gather it all and pull it free

Trendrils of illness and lingering pain,

I remove it from [target’s name]’s veins

I pull all sickness and pull it free.”

Put at least one finger into the water, keeping your other hand on or above the poppet. Finish the spell by saying the following,

“I pass it all,

All the pain and sickness

Into this water that helped birth us all.

Absorb and cleanse the sickness [target’s name]

And disperse as soon as this water touches the earth.”

Continue to hold you want in this manner until you’re too tired to continue or you feel like the spell’s done. Then, immediate carry the water outside and dump in a patch of soil. Blow out the candles, cleanse the glass (or get rid of it), and put the doll somewhere for safekeeping.

Notes:

  • Poppet alternatives can be anything. You can use any humanoid shaped object (paper, a video game character like from The Sims, candle, carved from a root, etc) or you can pick something that’s representative like an animal figure or an object that is a good representation of them.
  • Healing focus refers to what the poppet’s stuff with. Healing herbs are an obvious choice. Select healing or light colors for the material. You can also stuff it with stuff that reminds the target of good, healthy times or photos of when they were in great health.
  • Regular water from your tap is fine here. You can also use purified water or enchanted or bless water. Caster’s choice but I recommend tap water or collected water from a lake, pond, river, stream, or ocean.
  • Use a cup or glass that can be washed and cleansed or otherwise disposed of.
  • Tealight candles are really good for a single use spell. If you’re going to use this spell over a long length of time, upgrade your candles to votives, tapers, or pillars so you can use the same candles for each repetition of the spell.
  • Use fire safety!
  • To end the connection of the poppet to your target, place your hand over the poppet and say, “Your job is done, thank you for all you’ve done. I end this spell. I un-name you now. And I bury you. Thank you for all you’ve done.” Then bury the poppet.

Captured Wind Energy Spell [Spell Saturday #62]

Ever just need a boost of spiritual coffee? Like you’re just looking at your remote control three inches away and it would take a monumental effort to actually reach over and grab it? You’re not really tired physically or mentally but you’re just “ugh”?

Doldrums is a state of listlessness, despondency, slump, or stagnation. It’s also a word used in maritime to refer to a low pressure area near the Equator where the ocean become calm – there are no prevailing or sail-worthy winds. In both usages of the word, there is an implied danger. If you’re too listless, nothing will get done and things pile up (like laundry). If you’re sailing and there’s no winds, you’ll die.

Being the sea-oriented witch, I created a spell that can break doldrums of all kinds.

What you’ll need:

  • A windy day when you have good energy
  • A cord such as a piece of ribbon, string, rope, etc.
  • A mood boosting drink like coffee, tea or an energy drink

Select your cord. It can be as long or as short as you’d like but you’ll nee to be able to make three to five knots in it. The number of knots can depend on whatever number feels best. Three’s traditional for a wind knot spell like this but five’s a good number for creating energy and movement. Use whatever number feels best for you.

Take your drink and wash the cord in it. Let the cord dry in the sun.

On a windy, sunny day where you have a lot of energy, take the cord somewhere with a lot of wind and tie knots, “capturing” the powering of the wind in the knots.

As you tie the knots say something like:

My power and might

I capture along with the wind

Be kept still and quiet

Until you’re needed again

Keep the cord safe and stowed away until you need it. When the doldrums hit, untie a knot. You should be able to gain a boost of energy.

Notes:

  • Creating a cord by weaving, braiding, or tying materials together works well to give this spell more power.
  • Wash the cord in whatever energy boosting liquid you like. Coffee’s a good example but it’s entirely personal preference. Wash it in a favorite soda, tea, or whatever else if you prefer.

Fire’s Vessel [Spell Saturday #60]

This is a spell and ritual to invite the energy of fire into yourself, at the cost of pushing down your connection to other elements. This can be used temporarily or repeated for a more long-term effect.

You might cast this spell as part of a summer solstice or fire-based festival. Or you might do it to gain motivation and keep procrastination at bay. Or you might cast it to gain confidence, courage, and a bit of recklessness. Why you’d do this is up to you.

What happens to the other elements? They’re suppressed a bit so other aspects of your personality and magic might not be as strong during the duration of the spell. This is why the spell has a time duration built in, to avoid long-term or weird side effects.

Fire's Vessel by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

  • A live flame from a candle, fireplace, bonfire, etc.
  • Representation of wind/air
  • Representation of water
  • Representation of Earth

At sunrise, light your fire. Set up the element representations around you in a circle. You should be sitting or standing in front of the fire.

Meditation or simply sit quietly thinking about the elements and how you interact with them. Once you think you’re ready or you find your thoughts drifting away entirely or you have nothing else to think about, get ready to begin.

Take a deep breath and say,

“As the sun rises, I become the vessel of fire

I am fire

Free, brave, and wild

I am fire

Bold, strong, and true.”

Now push aside the elemental representations of air, water, and earth.

“Beneath my skin, air, water, and earth will live

But my blood will be fire

Until the sun sets in the my sky.”

Pass your hand from east to west.

“As the moon rises, my fire will bank

My elements will reset.”

You can now blow out the candle and put it aside for solar worship, fire element representation, or to repeat the spell.

Notes:

  • While this spell is written for the classical four element believe, it is completely adaptable to whatever element system you use (assuming you use fire and need the spell at all).
  • Use whatever representations for the elements that you like. Air might be a feather or an empty glass. Water might be a glass of water or collected tears. Earth may be garden soil or stones. You get the idea.

Eyes of Truth Spell [Spell Saturday #59]

This spell is designed to help reveal what lies beyond normal sight. So spirits, energy patterns, etc. Note this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll see things with your physical eyes. You may simply be able to get a clear-cut image in your eye. This, too, is “seeing”.

It is not a spell that should be run all the time because it can a drain in your energy, cause headaches, eye pain, and a distorted sense of reality. Additionally, if you already have these issues, this spell can increase the frequency of the incidents or otherwise cause trouble for you. Yeah seriously. (Look, you only need to nearly crash your car once trying to avoid a ghost dog to realize that sometimes seeing all that is out there in the world is a bad idea. Trust me.)

Use your best judgment on when to use this spell. Double check to make sure that you’re not allergic to the ingredients before using.

Eyes of Truth Spell by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

  • Caldendula
  • Eyebright
  • Thyme
  • Sandalwood
  • Lavender
  • Wormwood
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • A trigger object like a pair of glasses or earrings (optional)

A trigger will be needed to activate this spell. An object is the easiest to enchant but you could also create a sigil to write on your hand or link the act of tapping six times with your middle finger as the trigger. If you want to use an object, eyeglasses, earrings, and other easily portable or wearable objects are a good idea. What you use depends on how skilled you are with energy manipulation and what kind of trigger you want. Once you decide what the trigger should be, cleanse the object or area.

Take a pinch of each ingredient and spend time carefully allowing your energy to flow into the herbs. Grind the herbs between your fingers to combine them together. Take your time with this. You should really concentrate and focus on drawing out the properties that enhance sight for these herbs. While you grind the herbs, you can think or say that you want to enhance your sight to see auras, spirits, energy, whatever or you can be more vague about it. It’s up to you.

When ground together, steep the herbs in boiling water for at least twenty minutes. Allow the liquid to cool entirely before straining. Keep the liquid.

Now hold your hand over the liquid and say,

With my own power, I will see all

I will reach beyond what my eyes currently see

Allow me to see the world as it is

I wash doubt and illusion away

Until only the truth remains.

Now wash your eyelids with this water. You just need to dab the water on your eyelids and the area around your eyes. I don’t recommend getting any in your eyes.

Now’s the time to set the trigger. Rub the liquid on the object or the area of your body the trigger is set up in. If you’re using tapping, then wash that finger. If you’re writing a sigil with your hand in the air, wash that hand. If using an object go ahead and wash that. You don’t need to soak it. You just need to get the object/body part damp with the water.

Activate the trigger. Whatever you’re going to do to activate this spell should be done now. When done, end the activation by either repeating the action again or by doing it in reverse. (You could use another means to end the spell, if you prefer.)

Take the liquid and the herbal remains and mix them with cleansing water before disposing of it. Pouring the liquid down the drain and tossing the herbs in the garbage is fine but you may wish to dry the herbs and keep it in a satchel to boost your spiritual eyesight.

Notes:

  • This spell strongly relies on energy manipulation. It’s also a permanent spell cast upon you. If you’re not looking for a long-term solution like this, try a different spell.

Happy spell casting!

Study Buddy [Spell Saturday #58]

Want to find a study group or study buddy for your classes? Need to cram for an exam and want someone to help? Just need a pal to commiserate with? This spell’s for you.

Study Buddy Spell by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

  • rosemary
  • water

Bring about a cup of water to a boil. Add about a teaspoon of rosemary and leave for twenty or more minutes. Strain the rosemary from the water, keeping the water.

Dab the rosemary infused water on the cover of your books, backpack, clothing, or skin before heading to class or study hall. You can say something like:

“Study buddy, come to me

We’ll share what we know

To pass our classes/exams successfully”

Each batch should only be kept for up to 48 hours for health and safety reasons (don’t put moldy water on yourself, please) so be ready to make a new batch as needed.

You can also adjust the spell to work on specific people. A good choice for this is to use a candle, your textbooks, or class facebook group as a summoning focus. Sprinkle a drop or two of the water over the candle, book, or screen and cast the spell the same.

Notes:

  • Be sure that you’re not allergic or sensitive to rosemary before use if you use it on your body. You may also want to check if rosemary clashes with any medications you’re taking.
  • You can add sugar or honey to the infused mixture to “sweeten and draw people to you” but you risk increased insect activity.
  • You can also add coffee to the infused mixture to add speed to the spell.

Modern Check Money Spell [Spell Saturday #55]

Ever wish you could just write a check out to yourself for free money? Who hasn’t. This spell is designed to do just that. It’s built specifically to encourage the right amount of money to come to you by a due date.

This is a classic spell. I’m not reinventing the wheel here. I’m sure there have been practitioners writing themselves checks since forever. But, uh, checks are kind of out of fashion these days and I can honestly say that I don’t think many of my readers even know how to write a check. I think I write a single check a year and I always have to look up whether I’m forgetting something every year. It’s a thing. Anyway, because checks aren’t often used, this spell style needs to be updated to modern times.

Remember to double check your magical paradigm. Mine says that the more constraints you put on a spell, the more magic has to work to create it. So ask for a million dollars by tomorrow and it’s less likely to happen than, say, twenty dollars by tomorrow. Your paradigm and experiences may claim different but, uh, kick some money back towards me if you do land a million, OK?

Modern Money Check Spell by This Crooked Crown

What you’ll need:

  • Basil
  • Mint (any kind)
  • Cinquefoil (five finger grass)
  • Clover
  • Coins
  • Boiling water
  • Writing utensil
  • A check or invoice-like print out

First gather a pinch of each herb and let it steep in about a cup of boiling water for at least fifteen minutes. Put coins along with the herbs. Let cool and strain the herbs and coins, keeping the water. Put the coins back in the water and put aside. If you want, you can further enchant the herbs/ water to bring you money.

While the herbs are steeping, find a writing utensil. Typically you’d use a pen or pencil but there’s a good chance that it won’t write well when dipped in water so you might be better off using a toothpick or paintbrush to write with. The ink doesn’t need to be visible so what you write with doesn’t matter.

You’ll also want to find a check or invoice print out. This should be a blank check, but if you’re like me and can’t remember the last time you wrote a check, print out a invoice or money transfer template. You can do this by taking a screen shot of the transfer money page of your online banking or downloading a blank invoice template.

Now dip your writing utensil in the water and fill out the check, money transfer, or invoice as completely as you can with the water as the ink. If your form doesn’t have a “due by” date, then use the “date” line as when you want the money. If you need to put an item on the form, just write whatever you need the money for. Rent, bills, to buy shoes, whatever. Let the paper dry completely. Dispose of the water by pouring it on your doorstep, washing the floor with it, or pour it down the drain. Keep the coins and don’t spend them if possible.

Once dry, put the paper in an envelope and put the envelope somewhere out of the way until after the “due by date” passes. After the “due by date” passes, bury or burn the envelope and paper entirely.

Common Money Spell Ingredients by This Crooked Crown

Notes:

  • Use fire safety if you burn the paper.
  • You do not need to use all the herbs in this spell. You can just use basil or mint and you’ll be just fine. Alternatively you can use any money drawing ingredients you have.
  • Don’t drink the water if you put coins or stones in it. Please don’t do that.
