Personal Party Boost Spell (Spell Saturday #23)
Ever have some sort of event you need to go to but you’re not exactly thrilled about going there? Whether it’s your least favorite cousin’s wedding or an out of town conference, sometimes you need to help boost your own personal enjoyment of event.
This spell’s purpose is to invite good, enjoyable things to happen to you personally. What happens specifically, isn’t detailed in the spell so be prepared. Maybe you’ll find someone to chat about a new book with, make a new friend, or hook up with someone amazing. You may find a great little coffee place to escape to or have someone say something that gives you a revelation. There’s a lot of room for possibility with this spell.
However, it’s a tricky spell that requires some forethought. There’s some specific conditions that need to be met in order to get the spell to work properly and mismanagement will break the spell entirely.
Time limit
The spell’s length is designed to last from the time you arrive at the event to the time you leave. If you’re in the habit of thinking that the trip to the event is part of the event itself, then you can extend the time until you leave and come back to your house. You can leave your house and come back multiple times if you need to pop in to grab something but you shouldn’t rest at your home as it’ll break the spell. Note I say “rest” and not “sleep”. Collapsing into you bed in exhaustion and then scurrying out the door again doesn’t count in this case. Essentially, the spell operates on the same atmosphere created by the event. So if you go home and veg out for a few hours in front of the TV to catch a break, you’ll interrupt the atmosphere of the event and thus the spell. If you’re relaxing at a hotel or out with friends, it doesn’t count, even if those specific things aren’t related entirely to the event itself.
Atmosphere
Another thing about this spell is that it largely feeds on the high emotions that surrounds major events. Even the most somber events will have a lot of emotions running. That’s the aforementioned atmosphere and that’s why the spell ends when the event ends. It runs out of juice, so to speak. The kind of emotions and energy isn’t important to the spell – it’s about the amount of energy and emotions. So the more chaotic and hectic the event is, the better the spell will work.
Repeated castings
While this spell can be cast multiple times (such as in the event of the spell breaking) it tends to muddle the event with fragmented spells and knots of energy. That might not make sense if you’re not sensitive to energy itself but, simply put, it leaves a residue that clutters up the space, magically speaking. The energy can be removed via cleansing or untangling but that’s an extra step and you may not have access to all the areas affected. So it’s best to cast this once and be done with it.

Spell combination clashing
Combinations with this spell can be tricky. If you don’t watch the wording and purposes of the spells, they can clash in a rather spectacular fashion. That might be entertaining if you have nothing to be concerned about but magically priming an event so it falls to pieces when something goes wrong (and something always goes wrong) isn’t exactly a nice thing to do.
Make sure to watch what kind of spells you combine. Glamours work very well with this spell so you can use them freely. Beauty and confidence spells work beautifully with this spell. Protection spells, such as guarantees overall safety or anti-fire spells, tend to be OK. Clashes begin to occur when you focus on details like spells to boost overall happiness. Even anti-anxiety spells tend to get clash.
A good rule of thumb is remember that the spell works on the atmosphere of the event so if your spell effects the atmosphere, such as a boost to happiness or a general “this event will not make me anxious”, it will disrupt and clash with this spell.
That isn’t to say you should avoid all other spells. A piece of enchanted jewelry will reduce clashing because it’s a contained item spell. Sigils are hit and miss – sometimes they’ll clash and cause this spell to fail and sometimes they won’t.
I’ve specifically tested this with anti-anxiety spells. I think the clashing with the anti-anxiety and this spell comes from a the general blanket calm that comes with the anti-anxiety spells. If you have something very specific, such as a trigger or squick, you can probably cast an anti-anxiety spell against that specific thing and be OK (unless, of course, the event is about that thing such as going to a baby shower when you have tokophobia.) Outside of that, items such as the previously mentioned enchanted jewelry might be a better way to go.
Blanket spell only
A blanket spell is a spell you cast without tying it to an object or yourself. Like pulling a blanket over a bed, the spell is cast over the entire space, event, or time. Blanket spells fade away over time. Most spells you run into are blanket spells.
Don’t use this spell on the event badge, if your event uses one. Event badges are great for dropping multiple spells on, especially if you don’t want to go through the trouble of enchanting jewelry or clothing but this spell doesn’t work well when tied to an object. It’s like the spell’s always primed to go and only works in bursts. Better to cast this spell as a blanket spell rather than tie it to an object.
Doesn’t effect the event itself
This spell is purposely designed so it doesn’t effect the event itself. You’re not casting it to make sure your party or wedding is a sure success. You’re casting it to make sure that you have a good time at the event.
I discovered that casting spells to boost happiness on objects, such as an arch of balloons or something, rather than a blanket spell doesn’t clash with this spell and still allows an overall effect to the event.
It’s a fussy spell, perhaps, but it can be great when you know that you’re going to need some personal entertainment at a boring event.
You’ll need:
- An invitation to the event. Even printing out a calendar with the event on it will work.
- Drawing powder or sugar
- A good mood
- A small mirror or reflective surface
- All of the shoes you’ll be wearing
Get yourself into a good or at least ambivalent mood. You should be in a good enough mood so you don’t think less than friendly things about the event. You might not be happy about going to this event so make sure that you’re in a mood where your feelings about the event are at least neutral.
Place the invitation against the back of the mirror, so the writing or picture would be facing you if the mirror wasn’t in the way.
Sprinkle the drawing powder over your reflection in the mirror, smile and think of good, happy things when doing this. You don’t have to think of anything specific. Even remembering the cuteness of a puppy works. You just need to be truly content and happy for that moment.
Now put the mirror down and look at the invitation and say,
Joy comes to my side
Happiness is my companion
Luck heralds my coming
[Event name]
I join you
And bring my own sunshine
Now sprinkle some of the drawing powder inside your shoes (even flip flops or sandals) and you’re good to go!
Tips:
- Drawing powder is often simply just powdered sugar. My own secret recipe is a bit different but essentially, it’s a powder that’s entirely purpose is to draw stuff to you.
- You do not have to keep the drawing powder in the shoes. I typically sprinkle the powder inside the shoes then wipe the shoes clean with a paper towel a little while later. You can do it immediately or wait until you’re ready to go. It’s up to you.
- If you want to make sure that you have certain things happen, then you’ll need to collect a pile of “good things”. For example, if you want to find a good book, have good food, or a good place to sleep, you’ll need representations of those things from your own home. So buy a cupcake, grab your favorite pillow, and snag a good book to use as representations. If you’re aiming for friendship or love, you’ll want an object that makes you think of friends or love such as rose petals or pulling up your text messages on your cellphone. Pass the invitation over the pile of good things and sprinkle with drawing sugar. This should be done before you do the mirror step.
- I always, always bring a travel grimoire with me when traveling or attend these kinds of events. The travel grimoire can vary in size but it will have “emergency spells” such as anti-anxiety, healing, protection, etc. It’ll have information and references I might want to have (names of spirits to summon or color combinations, what-have you), and lists of 10 common herbs to use for specific purposes. This means that this little book gives me exactly what I need for reference no matter where I am. The spells are all designed to work without much set up, if any, so they can be cast on the go. Bonus tip: Even the most staunch anti-technology practitioners would benefit from keeping a short file on their cellphones for these kinds of events.
- Ask another practitioner if they can see any conflicts with the spells you want to use. They might not use the same kind of paradigm or magic but they can still offer a different perspective.
- Divination is completely unaffected by this spell.
- Enchanted jewelry and clothing are witchy-essentials for events as far as I’m concerned. Enchanting stuff allows you to run spells without worrying overmuch about clashing and, more importantly, since it’s a completed spell, it doesn’t drain you. Plus you can set up the spells in advance which is huge when there’s a million things to do.
- For goodness’ sake, enchant your suitcases and important items like cellphone and jewelry with anti-theft, return/find me!, and “notice me!” spells. It’ll help keep your cellphone in hand, your jewelry in your possession, and your suitcase from disappearing when encountering the void known as airports.
Happy casting!
How to Deal with a Cursed Object
If you wind up with an object that’s cursed/hexed, things can turn ugly pretty quick. Not sure you’re cursed? Here’s a list of common things that happen when you’re cursed.

How to handle a cursed object varies on culture and your specific practice but here’s some tips:
- Don’t touch the object. Put gloves on, wrap something around the object, etc.
- Remove the object from your space. I recommend taking it to a crossroad and finishing the hex breaking there but that might not be possible.
- Don’t bring it inside. This is much like the above but if you catch the cursed object before bringing it indoors you can save yourself a lot of trouble.
How to break the curse on an object depends on what you’re willing to do with the object itself. Some will be appropriate and others not so much. Be sure to pick a technique that is best suited for your objects. Also keep in mind that there’s some tradition in setting up a failsafe in curses that trigger when the cursed object is broken without the hex being broken first. You’ll have to guess or divine which method is the best one for you.
- Dip, wash, boil, or fry the object in cleansing water. Purified or water from a living source (river, ocean, etc) is ideal. You can also infuse cleansing herbs or stones in the water as well.
- Fry, wash, boil, or dip in oil. Typically infusing the oil with herbs is ideal. Hot oil is good for destroying the object but be careful for burns.
- Toss it in a fire
- Toss it in a living body of water.
- Abandon it at a crossroad
- Give it to someone else
- Urinate on it
- Bury it
- Pour salt on it
- Circle the object three times in salt or pour salt into your hand and pass over the object three times. Toss the salt in a fire in either case.
- Pour cleansing herbs on it
- Let a stone absorb it’s curse and toss the stone away
- Perform a hex breaking spell
As always, do what works best for you and your practice and be careful. There’s no need to do something illegal or hurt yourself trying to end a curse.

Invisibility Glamour (Spell Saturday #22)
A glamour is a spell that is a field of illusion magic that concentrates on altering how the target is perceived.Glamours come in all shapes and sizes but they’re incredibly useful all around. They’re almost always temporary. They can also be cast unintentionally so you might have been using a glamour spell for years without even knowing it.
I adore glamours. They’re among my top five fav spell categories. And invisibility glamours are my jam. I was super shy as a kid (still am, actually) so being able to move through school or a crowd without being noticed made me feel so much better.
An invisibility glamour doesn’t mean that you’ll suddenly become invisible but rather that a glamour allows someone to not pay attention to you. Their attention is diverted elsewhere or they simply don’t notice you. It’s a neat trick but it’s not Harry Potter’s cloak. People will see you they just won’t notice you.
To cast an invisibility glamour, you’ll need to duck into a corner, darkened hallway, or off to the side of a room. That’s really rather optional but I find it makes it easier to gather your thoughts and set the illusion properly. You’ll want to remain still and calm during the spell casting.
Now think or whisper very clearly “I am unseen. No one sees me. I am invisible. Don’t notice me. I’m not here. Look elsewhere. I’m not worth looking at. You don’t see me.” It doesn’t have to be that exactly but similar phrasing said or thought very quickly and very passionately will set your intent.
Now while saying all of that, pull your energy around you, like pulling a blanket over your head. The room might seem a little dimmer or quieter, like muffled. (It might not, but that’s OK. It’s not a consistent experience.) Keep that energy set around you and go about your business. You may wish to keep muttering to yourself about not being seen as you pass through crowds but you shouldn’t need to.
With practice, you can set a glamour and anchor it around you, keeping the energy up but without having to deal with the active thinking involved.
To release the glamour, you’ll just release the cloak of energy and allow the energy to slid off you, like shedding a coat. Shake off any excess energy and go about your day.
Notes:
- Glamours do not universally work this way. Most glamours are a cast once and done sort of deal. They don’t need to be fed continuously. A “don’t notice me” glamour works exactly like above but it’s not fed the way this glamour is. By feeding it continually energy, you’re making the spell rather powerful.
- If you’re not use to powering continually spells, you’ll be tired after using it. This is true for even if you are use to feeding spells like this. Practice makes it far easier and it’s a good skill to master.
- Smoky quartz helps with this sort of magic, in my experience.
- Cats are naturally gifted at this sort of magic so if it helps, think of how a cat moves through a room.
Happy casting!
Introducing a New Series: Spirit Destinations
The astral and spirit realms are immensely vast. Possibly too vast to even understand. This is an amazing place full of adventure, dangers, and wonder.
Everyone has the capability to astral travel. It takes practice to be able to slid out of your body, to ignore the physical feeling of your body, and cast your mind elsewhere. Even the most established practitioners have trouble with it at times, depending on their own spiritual turmoil and stress. There are hundreds of names for this journey and thousands of ways to do it. Research, experimenting, time, and practice will help you determine which methods are best for you.
The crossing to these lands is described as the most difficult part. But that’s not necessarily true. Knowing where to go is. Once you have a means of travel the destination becomes the question. When dreamers or spirit walkers arrive in the realms they either in an entirely strange place or somewhere familiar. (If they’re not aiming for a particular destination, that is.)
Finding a safe place to land and explore can be extremely difficult. Even if you do find a place, it can be hard to find it a second time. Asking directions in the astral is nearly impossible. The worlds and very topography change with the whims of the residents and rulers of the territories.
The best way for beginners to start is to know where they’re going and to know that place is safe and welcoming.
So, I’m launching a new series called “Spirit Destinations” that detail as much as possible where to go in the astral and spirit realms and what to find while you’re there. I will be personally vetting each location so you’ll know what and who to avoid along the way.
I’m really excited to share these places with you and I hope to see you in the astral!
The King’s Divination Sample Reading
Here’s a sample of what a reading using my personal divination method known as the King’s Divination looks like.
Note, all photos for your readings are personal and never shared on social media.
The King’s Divination reveals that your most immediate concern should be getting organized. You’ll want to review your schedule and make sure that you’re getting back on track. Not just because you have stuff to do but because you want to. For personal empowerment and to be able to cleanse yourself from the muck and negativity you’re surrounded by right now.
The most important aspect right now to consider is yourself. You are your most powerful tool. Your instincts, intuition, and self is key to your whole future right now. You are your best motivation and best friend. Remember to listen to yourself. Listen to your heart and spirit. It will guide you where you need to go.
Your relationships with others are very important right now. Allow yourself to trust your heart to others. Don’t lock up your heart tightly. Allow yourself to meet people and befriend those around you. In doing this, you’ll gain great personal power and enrich your life. It will make things much more vibrant and pleasant for you.
Success is possible for you, just avoid making mistakes. Allow yourself to be confident. Modesty and humility won’t help you right now. Embrace what you have and show it off.
Delusions rule over you right now. Get rid of the false illusions you allow and cleanse your spirit. You’ll want to be ready for what’s coming and separating yourself from toxic and negative things will only help you move forward.
Your life is rather split right now. There’s the relationships section of your life which is entirely separate from your success section of your life. Both hold importance to you but you are slightly leaning towards needing more people in your life. You’re probably feeling lonely or isolated right now. You’ve allowed yourself to get into that position so don’t be surprised that it’s happened. You’re responsible for your heart so take responsibility for it. Conquer those people-related fears and move forward.
The first step is with the self and on the mundane level. Follow that up with being true to yourself and you can’t go wrong.
The King’s Divination is an additional option to my etsy readings (the “cards + divination” option) and adds a different perspective on things.
The King’s Divination is also largely impersonal so it doesn’t get sassy like other divination methods do. It tells the truth as it sees it, firm and sincere but not unkind.

Fire Guardian (Spell Saturday #21)
This is one method of creating a magical guardian construct from fire. This is a permanent spell with a secondary activation for the construct summoning. Essentially, you can the spell now and you’ll cast a second spell to summon them to your side.
A magical construct is a somewhat sentient being created through your magic and energy. You forge it, pouring your energy into a clear image in your mind, creating it from yourself. You can read more about magical constructs and servitors here.
You can use this for any kind of fire construct but we’re aiming for a guardian and protection construct here.
You’ll need:
- Fire
- A comfortable place to sit
Ahead of time, you’ll want to think of what kind of guardian you want. Do you want a lion made of lion that will guard you and keep you warm at night? A fire wolf? A phoenix? Even a simple ball of fire works well. Use your imagination or look up pictures online for inspiration. Even if you’re unsure of what you want them to appear like, that’s OK. You can still cast the spell. Be sure to read the whole spell through. There’s more questions you’ll need to answer during the spell.
Get yourself a fire. A fire pit or fire place is a great option but a large candle will work just as well. Sit somewhere comfortable with the fire within reach. You should be close enough to feel the heat but not so close you’ll burn yourself.
Now stare at the fire until you focus only on that. Let your mind go blank and only start at the fire. Now, with the fire solely in your mind and burned (metaphorically) in your vision, close your eyes.
Very clearly think of the physical form you want the construct to take. If you haven’t decided, then let some images come to you. Push your energy out to the fire (not the candle or wood the fire is on but the fire itself) and pull the fire’s energy towards you. Use that fire, in your mind, to make the construct.
If you’re not much for envisioning, you can speak out loud what you want your guardian to look like. Tell the fire to come to you and try to push towards the fire without moving.

Once you have the construct’s image very clear in your mind and you’re happy with it’s appearance, now tell it what it’s job is. Tell the construct that it’s job is to protect you, to come when you call. Tell it to guard you home, to watch over you when you sleep, to keep you safe from spirits and other practitioners. You may want to tell it that it will serve only you or protect your loved ones. What you tell it is up to you. This is your formation process so be sure to tell it firmly, in detail, what you want of it.
Now tell it how it powers itself. Is the power derived from you? Does its power from from fire itself? This decision matters when considering the activation spell. If fire it the power source, the construct will be more self-aware and independent but will need fire to surge into being and be able to use it’s abilities. If it’s derived from you, you’ll have more control but you’ll be exhausted after summoning them. You can do a mesh of both, if you like. The construct lives in fire though so don’t be surprised if they appear at random when working with fire.
Be sure to include the activation spell. The secondary spell should be something that you create yourself. Maybe you need to light a candle or flick on a lighter to give the entity power to manifest. A couplet is usually easier and more on the go but probably will only be useful if you’re construct derives power from you. A combination is also possible. It’s up to you to decide. Make sure that the activation spell is something that you can remember. A couplet like “[Name], being forged of fire, come to my side and protect me” is a good basic couplet.
Now that you’ve told the construct it’s job, how it feeds itself (powers itself), and how you’ll summon it, you’ll need to give it a name. This is something that’s private, personal, between the two of you. I give my constructs two names – their true one which only I know of and a nickname which I use when speaking to them around others. Their true name is the one to focus on. You can use their true name to force them to do something, which is especially useful to avoid rampancy or them attacking the wrong people.
That’s it! You’ve created a fire guardian. I highly recommend you write down or drawn you fire guardian so you can always refer to the impressions and images you have of them. Constructs are largely mutable, especially when they don’t have a physical host like the fire guardian, so don’t be surprised if they appear somewhat different every time you summon them.
Alternative version:
This spell can also be used, with slight variations as a spirit guide meeting spell. A spirit guide has many definitions but, largely, is a spirit who want to help you in some capacity, whether to offer advice, hope, or education. A spirit guide is a useful spirit friend to have.
If you’re looking to meet a spirit guide, think or say clearly “I want to meet a spirit of fire willing to help and guide me”. Repeat this every few minutes until you get an impression or sense that someone else is with you. In all likelihoods, this is a spirit of fire willing to help you. Ask it questions and see if you can strike up a partnership.
Notes:
- This spell is slightly dangerous. Not just because of the magical construct and spirit contact but because of the proximity of the fire. Be safe and give this a miss if you’re unsure you can pull it off. Don’t hurt yourself.
- Use fire-safety. Keep fire-killing items around you during this spell in case things go wild.
- Do NOT do this spell when you’re tired. Do it only when you’re awake and have a lot of energy. You don’t want to fall asleep with the fire going.
Happy casting!
Charm for Victory [Spell Saturday #20]
Sometimes you just need to win. Whether you’re at a sporting event or a court case or it’s just trivia night at the local bar or a big exam is coming up, victory is sometimes necessary. This will help.
You’ll need:
- Bay laurel
- Ginger
- Chamomile
- Protea
- Oak leaves
- Betony
- Cinquefoil (Five Finger Grass)
- Clover
- Sturdy Green or gold bag
Collect your herbal ingredients and grind them into a powder. As you grind them, put a lot of energy and effort into it, more so then usual. Work up a sweat. When you’re happy with it, place all of the ingredients inside a sturdy green or gold bag. Carry with you when you need victory.
Notes:
- The easiest material to make the bag out of it felt. Leather, wool, canvas, or dense cotton also works.
Happy casting!
Changing Your Perspective
One of the most common pieces of advice I see when reading tarot cards is “change your perspective”. Change your outlook, alter how you look at things, etc. I end up echoing that sentiment a lot when asked for advice outside of readings too.
For me, this isn’t just about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes or seeing through their eyes and motives. It’s also about changing how you look at something. It’s allowing the change of hope and optimism to take a front seat. It’s giving yourself, and others, the benefit of the doubt.
I’ll be honest, that’s very easy to say and very hard to do. Some people just want to be misunderstood or are angry for perfectly good reasons and they’re too frustrated to explain what seems obvious to them. Other people are more logical and reasonable or are thinking of the bigger (or smaller) picture. And some people are just assholes.
I find the easiest way to change your perspective for yourself is to alter a daily habit you don’t think about but it slightly “negative”. This doesn’t mean the habit itself it negative but rather it’s something that you know you shouldn’t do or prefer you didn’t do but still do anyway.
For example, since I work from home and rarely see people for more than ten minutes a day, more than half the time I’m in lounge clothes. Which is a really fancy way of saying sweats and/or leggings and a cute tee. But it gets old after a while and after a week of rain, work, and the same kind of clothes, I’m looking for a change and might pull on a cute dress and heels. It’s a little thing and doesn’t really affect my day in the end but the change is personal and it wakes me up a bit. Like a cup of coffee for the soul.
Here’s another example. I know someone who is addicted to a particular soda. They drink it everyday and they drink at least one 12-ounce can each time. They even got into the habit of keeping it near the bed when they sleep so it’s the first thing they drink when they wake up. But they don’t even taste the caffeine or sugar anymore. It’s just there because that’s what you do for them. They didn’t stop that habit but instead started keeping water nearby and every time they took a drink of soda, they also took a drink of water. In the end, they started picking up healthier habits and cutting back on the soda. That single move altered their day only slightly but it made a much large impact.
Make no mistake. Changing your perspective is HARD. You have to admit that something’s wrong or something could be better. Often times that something is you.
This is why self-introspection (and shadow work) is so important. It allows you to look at yourself and your life and analyze it. It gives you the opportunity to change where you’re going and what you’re doing. So many people do the same thing on automatic, without thinking about what they’re doing. Changing your perspective allows you to look at those habits and decide if they’re best for you. You may not be able to change anything, at first, but you can make a plan of action.
That’s some of the best advice I can offer: change your perspective. Allow yourself to think outside of the box, outside of your emotions, outside of the logic and see what others are seeing. It can make a greater impact than you realize.
Divination Tool Review: The Heart of the Faerie Oracle
The Heart of the Faerie Oracle by Brian and Wendy Froud with Robert Gould © Harry N. Abrams
Status: Currently reading with it
Best for: Everyday questions, as this deck loves attention but relationship and spirit-relation questions are favored.
Favorite decks: The Rox, The Fixer, The Dreaming
Acquired from: A gift from a follower on tumblr back in 2012.

A gift from a follower who has since left the community. This is one of my favorite decks and certainly one of the easiest to work with. This deck can be snarky, a bit dark, and have more depth and meaning than you might assume right off the bat.
While this deck was designed for relationships (not just romantic but in general) and for introspection but there’s very little that this deck won’t do for me. This deck can be mischievous, blatantly and sometimes painfully obvious, and have hidden depths that can be easily missed by other readers. If you love faeries, this is the deck to chose, no matter what your question is.
It should be noted that this is an oracle deck, not a tarot and does not follow the tarot meanings in any way. Each card has its own meaning that as been written by the deck’s creators Brian and Wendy Froud. That being said, as with all divination tools, it’s up to the reader to divine the proper answer from the cards.
The book’s published by Abrams publishing so I’m assuming the deck is published there as well or outsourced accordingly. The printing quality is very good although the card stock is a bit on the thin side. Not paper thin but slightly thinner than your average tarot card or playing card.
The card stock still retains a sheen, even after years of abuse, although the sheen isn’t shiny but rather matte. This means that light doesn’t reflect off the cards but you will get a glare on the cards. It’s the same kind of coating playing cards use I believe. Due to the sheen, you’ll be able to tell under close inspection there’s scratches on the card but unless it’s a deep gouge, the card image itself probably won’t be damaged.
The cards are somewhat larger than average tarot cards, making the cards occasionally difficult to shuffle for those with small hands. The rounded edges are slightly more round than a normal tarot card I’d say, more along the lines of a playing card.
For some reason, this deck doesn’t really shuffle super well. Because of the size, I can bend the cards to shuffle the riffle-style but they tend to clump together in chunks, even after years. I’m assuming this is due to the size and card stock coating. I remember it having been difficult to shuffle when I first got the deck. Fanning powder wouldn’t go amiss here or just shuffling often to keep the cards moving smoothly.
The cards hold up well over time. I’ve used this deck on an almost weekly basis for years and only the edges where I shuffle are a little worn. It even holds up well in travel which is good because it’s gone across the country and around town in a handbag dozens of times.
The deck came in a large, flimsy cardboard box, not unlike a cracker box. I abhors tiny items in large boxes for seemingly no good reason, largely because with smart packaging design, it would save so much shipping cost and waste. In this case, the box size was largely created due to the companion book size.
I tend to keep the boxes because I have the space but I don’t store it with the book or deck. It’s stuck under a shelf actually. Instead, the book sits on a bookshelf with other divination books and the cards in a bag I crocheted for it.
This deck does come with a lengthy, hard-covered companion book (as does Brian Froud’s other oracle deck, the Faerie Oracle). There’s a ballpark of 137 pages (including the “notes” section). The book is broken up into sections such as “Queens”, “Queens’ Consorts”, “Archetypes”, “Tricksters”, and “The Journey” among others. Each card has it’s own page or two, with a red-toned image of the card in question and since easy card is numbered, it’s easy to look up the card’s meaning in the book. The cards are give a few key meanings (usually three) and a paragraph or two of some more in-depth things to look for. Since the deck is geared towards relationships and personal introspection, the questions or musings will pertain mostly to that. If you’ve read Froud’s work before, you’ll recognize how the faeries are described, not as images on a page but living people that are speaking to you through the artwork.
Little drawings from Froud are scattered throughout the book making it a pleasure for even just Froud fans to flip through. Additionally, there’s a few pages in the back for notes (as well as ample space in the pages’ margins). There’s also a little introduction in the beginning as well as a oracle how-to and interview session in the back with Frouds about the deck. There’s also a few scattered mystical quotes throughout. One spread is described in the back of the book but it’s entirely words so visual-oriented people might be displeased.
Overall, the book’s pretty handy and almost necessary at first but you’ll find yourself using it less and less over the years. I tend to only glance at it when my brain blanks out or I know there’s a keyword that I want for a specific reading and can’t remember it.

Art-wise, it’s Froud so expect some uniquely Froud designs. The large borders around the cards sort of disappear after a while because the colors of the borders at least go with the theme of the deck. It would be pretty hard to cut down the borders on this deck due to the typography and images.
The deck backs are colorful and remind me a bit of Sailor Moon. They’re very pretty and go along with the general theme of the deck. They’re also consistent mirrors so you can’t immediately tell if something’s reversed unless the card’s damaged in some way.
The art’s consistent in the sense it all has the same theme and it’s all very Froud. However, some cards are super fantasy-vibrant and others are dulled or almost folk-like. There’s a few cards that come off as sketches such as Oh No! and Of Two Minds This is all very on purpose however rather than feeling unfinished.
Color-wise, you get a pretty wide variance. Some cards like the Queen of the Night are dark while Oh No! and Of Two Minds have a greyscale sketch art. Elaborate backgrounds are everywhere here so there’s always some detail to look at in the cards. Some cards will strongly remind one of the Faerie Oracle such as The Faerie of Naughtiness or the Star Faerie in the sense that it’s more light and swirls than clear cut images. Expect a lot of dark purples, browns, blues, and black with splashes of lavender, white, gray, tan, and red.

The lettering is capital print in white and stands out nicely with the cards, making it easy to read. Usually you’re looking at the images. Sometimes the lettering can be difficult if there’s a super busy background in the card because the background can be distracting more than the lettering is difficult to read.
Nudity is pretty common in the deck and while genitals aren’t showcased, buttocks and breasts are fairly prominent. It reads entirely as art though and not pornography. It is something to be aware of when reading for others.

The content of the cards are very consistent as well. You know you’re looking at faeries. Some have more presence than others. Hope reads not as a subject where the faerie is key but the situation the faerie is in. In the Question or The Leaving, there’s a scene offered where in the Star Faerie, is a lot of glowy light in the vague shape of a faerie reminiscence of the Faerie Oracle. Generally speaking, there’s a main faerie on display with some amazingly busy and often muted backgrounds. Each card is very specifically and purposefully designed so it can be just as important to look at the background as it can be to look at the words or the main image.
With cards like “Lady of Joy”, “Queen of Bedlam”, and “Oh No!” you can easily use these cards in daily draws to remind yourself of what to keep in mind throughout the day. There’s a TON of hidden meaning though so you’re going to find some deeper, secondary meaning that might not be as positive or friendly as one might assume off the bat. The Shape Shifter, for example, as a few wings and two faeries. The whole flightiness, hard to pin down, and ever-shifting moodiness is obvious but the flip side is also obvious – seeing through it all with piercing eyes, capturing someone who is trying to run away. Look at what the faeries are holding or doing because there’s more insight there for you to find.
Generally speaking, when combined with the card titles, you can easily get to the card’s meaning but some are just curious. The first card “Queen of the Golden Bough” might give one pause when coming up with an immediate meaning. You might find yourself looking closer to the background or even diving for the book in a reading for the meaning. Some cards sort of end up with the same meaning with slight variances, depending on how you reading so you might want to keep that in mind when reading. How does The Lady of Joy differentiate from The Blessing or The Child? Or the Lady of Song and The Song?As archetypes, they’re similar enough so what makes them so different?
Most of the faeries have varying colored skin and some are larger women versus small slips of girls but by and large, they read mostly as white with a few exceptions. There are a TON of heterosexual and binary sort of thinking here. The Queens are all feminine presenting and the Queens’ Consorts are all masculine presenting. Since when are faeries so entirely binary or heterosexual? The less humanoid the faerie, the less binary (and more colorful) they get. Which leads me to thinking this: does this deck unintentionally present that the more solid and humanoid you are, the more binary or heterosexual you are? Or the more geared towards procreation? I find myself sometimes wishing for more in these terms in this deck.
And then, there’s some cards like the Hero that shows a long haired human in the main role. The image could be gender neutral but generally provokes a female-presenting image. The book in this case discusses how love can be a determinate factor in journeys. Yet cards like The Pan and The Boy are about adventures and are clearly masculine. This was probably intentional. It certainly brings up ideas like the movie the Labyrinth and books like Peter Pan.
Additionally, there’s the Lord of the Forest and the Lady of the Forest. I’m not overly thrilled with the humanization and binary gendering of these cards. I expected, honestly, a buck or some other sort of impressive beast-based faerie for the Lord and maybe some sort of water-based faerie or, even better, a large hunting predator-based faerie. These too would adhere to the gender binary, make no mistake, but at least they wouldn’t be extremely human looking. I don’t know. I don’t really have a solution for this specific problem but I do know they’re some of my least favorite cards in the deck.
This is certainly an oracle deck and reads very much like it but you can find correlation to tarot easily enough if you look for it (but so could everything if you look hard enough). It can be incredibly easy to learn but may throw you through a loop at times, especially if you miss some background image or side meaning that you wouldn’t normally jump right to. It can be read in a shallow manner at times, especially if you’re moving quickly and looking at the titles of the cards rather than the words. The duality of the cards in this sense is something that keeps me coming back to the deck but if you don’t connect immediately or aren’t a visual person, then the deck might not be a good choice for you.

This is one of my favorite decks so it’s on my “would definitely buy again” list. It does what it says on the tin. It’s an oracle deck about faeries and dives into the heart of matters and matters of the heart. It’s an excellent option for those looking for an oracle that can handle mystical questions but also divine about whether that cute barista is single or if today is the kind of day that you want to crawl back into bed. It’s not afraid of laying down some serious truth but can and will throw you a curve ball. It’s a keeper.
